Senior Retail Underwriter & Collection Officer

Position Summary

Reporting to the EVP Credit & Operations the Senior Retail Underwriter & Collection Officer is responsible for supporting the retail sales and administration departments, providing high quality service to our internal and external Retail members and potential members. The Senior Retail Underwriter & Collection Officer ensures all retail administration support provided is in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures and contribute positively to the growth of the credit union.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Retail Underwriting & Collections

  • Responsible to review, analyze and underwrite all in-coming applications for retail loans and mortgages within assigned limits and make credit recommendations and escalate as required.

  • Provides direct support and guidance to branch employees through ongoing coaching on credit structuring and alternative products.

  • Recommends changes for improvements of retail lending policies, procedures, documentation, products and services to strengthen Rapport Credit Union’s performance while maintaining delinquency control systems on all contractual loan delinquencies.

  • Works as an integral part of the Retail Underwriting and Collection team.

  • Receives and considers applications for personal loans and mortgages from all branches; formulates decisions and authorizes disbursement of funds of those loans within authorized lending limits, while ensuring they are made in accordance with legislation and Rapport’s Policy.

  • Escalates with recommendations all loans involving exceptions to policy or those above authorized limits and reviews all lending declines.

  • Maintains delinquency control systems on all contractual loan delinquencies over and beyond 30 days which are otherwise handled at the branch level. Initiates collection action for funds owing on delinquent accounts by analyzing and assessing status of accounts and identifying appropriate steps to be take in accordance with established collection policy, procedures and time frames.

  • Acts as liaison between the credit union and residential appraisers and lawyers, and resolves any issues relating to solicitors on mortgage files when required.

  • Recommends any charge –offs/foreclosures and/or legal actions to EVP Credit & Operations. Handles bankruptcy proof of claims and attends bankruptcy meetings when necessary.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.


  • Assists with completion of reports as required.

  • Ensures the completion of the foreclosed and non-foreclosed lending report monthly.

  • Completes monthly delinquency reporting for the EVP Credit & Operations.

  • Ensures the monthly underwriting stats report is completed accurately.


  • Senior Underwriter & Collection Officer will provide routine administrative support to the branches in accordance with Rapports service standards.

  • Assists with development, implementation of systems utilized for organization, recording and reporting within the Retail Lending administrative area.

  • Acts as a resource to staff on Retail lending services and products.

  • Must be proactive in continuing education and upgrade in order to keep up to date with changes in the industry relating to job function.

  • Represents the credit union positively in the community and when attending work-related functions.

  • Sundry duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Business or Finance.

  • PCG School or equivalent retail lending/collection courses.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a senior credit adjudication role.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment.

  • Primarily sitting.

  • No travel required.

  • Some overtime may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Rapport vision, mission and core values, products and services including knowledge of Commercial account openings and lending

  • Excellent working knowledge/competence with Rapports banking system

  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements with regard to commercial account opening.

  • In depth knowledge of retail personal and mortgage lending underwriting and risk management practices. The ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and consistency in credit decisions.

  • Proficient in the use of Word, Excel and other MS Office suites.

  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written business communication skills.

  • Time management/prioritization skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, time sensitive environment.

  • File maintenance/records management skills.

  • Well-developed problem solving and analytical skills sufficient to resolve complex, non-routine issues.

  • May be required to work extended hours.

  • Must be able to meet deadlines.

  • Some travel may be required between branches and to attend educational events.

  • Contract length - 9-12 months


  • Monday to Friday

  • No weekends


  • Collections: 3 years (preferred)

  • Mortgage Underwriting: 5 years (required)
